HVPOA’s Holiday Giving Weekend Report 2024

What a weekend!  Steady snow reminded us that Santa is on his way and our community again displayed its generosity through a fabulous turnout for holiday giving!  

With the help of our local Oro-Medonte Fire Department Station for all 3 events and numerous community volunteers, we collected:  

  • 227 toys and $2,345 in monetary donations to the Orillia Salvation Army through the Toy drive; 
  • 40 pounds of pet food plus supplies and $40 for the Comfy Cat Shelter and $300 for the Orillia SPCA from Saturday’s Candlelight Stroll; and 
  • 2,386 pounds of food, $225 in gift cards and $7,989 in monetary donations for the Salvations Army’s Orillia Food Bank plus an additional $3,450 in monetary donations directed to the Sharing Place in Orillia!!

STRs in Oro-Medonte Update

A few weeks ago, we shared with you a copy of a recent Divisional Court (Court of Appeal) decision which struck down a by-law concerning the Short-Term Rentals (STRs) in residential zones across the Township.   Some misinformation may be circulating that STRs are now “legal” in Oro-Medonte as a result of this decision — but they are not.

4th Line School and Community Centre Update

A Message from Councillor Lori Hutcheson to Ward 1 residents regarding the 4th Line School – Recreation Centre.

Hello! You will have definitely noticed that EarthWorks have begin at the future Community Centre – School site. I wanted to provide a brief update on the progress of the joint venture between the Township and the Simcoe County School Board. Previously, I advised that the Province announced their support in moving forward with the issuance of a tender for the project. December 20, 2023 Council approved the current project budget and endorsed the tender to Remo General Contracting. Now the on-site preliminary EarthWorks have started forming a component of site preparation. This activity will continue over the coming months.

Charlie Beatty of Horseshoe Valley, Ont., claimed Canada’s first gold medal at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea, by winning the freeski big air event.

Local Athlete Liam Brearley Captures Gold

Liam Brearley, a local athlete who resided in the area and trained at Mount St. Louis Moonstone, has captured his first gold in snowboard slopestyle at the World Cup event in Switzerland! He’d previously won two silver medals and a bronze in slopestyle before Saturday’s breakthrough.
